Nadia Murad unveils Mother & Justice Memorial alongside fellow survivors
This week, Nadia Murad was joined by survivors of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV), Mr. Winfried Kretschmann, Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, and Ms. Pramila Patten, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, to unveil the “Mother & Justice” Mobile Memorial.
The life-sized memorial, depicting a mother and her children bound with the scales of justice, stands as a symbol of hope and strength for survivors of CRSV worldwide. The memorial was inspired by the first Yazidi survivor who won a judgment in Germany against an ISIS member.
The event was a reminder that holding perpetrators accountable is crucial, especially as conflict and CRSV continue to rise globally. The memorial not only highlights the harrowing stories of Yazidi survivors of CRSV, but also serves as a source of hope that justice is achievable.
The unveiling was also a chance to remember the 10th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide through a photo exhibition highlighting the more than 2,000 Yazidi women and children who remain missing.
Nadia’s Initiative would like to thank the Government of Baden-Württemberg and the Deutsche Postcode Lotterie for their generous support on the project and event, and Rebecca Hawkins for her work on the sculpture.
