Nadia Murad joins U.S. Vice President Harris and fellow survivors at the White House to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict
To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, Nadia joined U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, fellow survivors, and experts at the White House to call for more robust accountability mechanisms and survivor-centered approaches in the fight to end conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV).
Referencing the UN Secretary-General’s recent report on the rise of CRSV in conflict zones around the world, Nadia emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs in the lead up to conflict that indicate the potential for sexual violence and other mass atrocities.
Nadia also highlighted that to prevent and eliminate CRSV, the international community needs to move beyond mere condemnation to actively using every legal mechanism available to hold perpetrators – and those who support them – accountable for their atrocities.
Finally, she talked about the importance of supporting survivors, while encouraging those who work with them to utilize the Murad Code, documenting their experiences in a way that is safe, ethical, and effective in upholding their dignity and human rights.
