Sinuni Main Road Beneficiary Details Impact of Rehabilitation Project on Residents' Livelihoods

The old adage states that “location is everything” when it comes to the success of small businesses. This proved to be true for the entrepreneurs whose shops on the Sinuni Main Road in North Sinjar were threatened by terrible road conditions. After years of conflict, the road was filthy, consumed by garbage, muddy in the winter, and dusty in the summer.

“Before the road was restored, my car repair business was in jeopardy. There were several muddy puddles and bumps along the way, making the road narrow and nearly impassable. Customers frequently complained about the traffic congestion surrounding my store and how the road conditions harm their vehicles when they visit my shop. I was losing customers day by day, as a result,” shop owner Hakim remarked.

Without a stable environment for commerce, there was no way for the region’s economy or residents to get back on their feet after genocide and war.

With funding from USAID, Nadia's Initiative restored Sinuni Main Road. According to Hakim, “After repaving the road, the place became clean and beautiful. People are returning to their houses, and many new businesses have been opened on this street. Now, we can do our work easier than before. Repairing and paving Sinuni Main Road increased commerce, and now we have more customers. I love my work now, and I go to my shop with excitement.”
