Zahra faced years of hardship even before ISIS invaded Sinjar. She lost her husband during the Iran-Iraq war, and was left with little means to support her son who lives with a disability.

After fleeing to a displacement camp, Zahra and her family only faced more challenges. Seeing other Yazidis begin to return home to Sinjar encouraged Zahra and her son and daughter-in-law to do the same.

“After our return, we had difficulty getting drinking water. We have a well in the house, but it was not potable, and it caused health problems. It was hard to save money to buy water because I am a widow, and no one in the family could work.”

Having to buy clean water was a drain on the family’s already strained resources. Nadia’s Initiative believes that no one should have to choose between their health and finances, so we worked with UAE Aid to restore water and sanitation infrastructure for Zahra’s family and many like hers.

“We no longer needed to buy water, and we were able to save that money to pay for other needs. We appreciate the efforts of Nadia's Initiative to provide these projects in the region. Sinjar needs such projects and more, such as supporting the livelihoods of families in need. We have great hope that Sinjar will improve, and we will be able to live here safely,” Zahra stated.
