Nadia's Initiative WASH Beneficiary Details Impact of Project on Family's Well-Being
Khensi lived in Duhola complex with her family before ISIS invaded Sinjar. Her peaceful life was shattered when ISIS reached Sinjar city and started killing Yazidis. Khensi managed to flee to the mountains, but couldn’t escape the trauma of what she and her family endured.
“People were dying of hunger and thirst. I was watching my family be subjected to the same death as the people I saw and heard about on the mountain, but I could not help anyone,” Khensi remembers.
After 3 years of living in displacement camps with limited services, Khensi and her family decided to return to their homeland — only to find that there was nothing left for them.
“We found that our entire house was destroyed and there was no water even to clean the house’s furniture. Many essential services are not available like water.”
Nadia’s Initiative rehabilitated the WASH infrastructure in Duhola village, including restoring sanitation facilities in schools. Khensi’s family and all local residents now have access to clean drinking water, allowing them to keep their community healthy and safe.
“We appreciate and thank the efforts of Nadia’s Initiative to implement this project for us because Nadia’s Initiative always provides services to the villages most in need. This project has had a positive impact on our daily lives.”
