Nadia's Initiative Commemorates International Day of Commemoration of the Victims of Genocide

"When genocide is committed, it must be seen. People must look at it with open eyes, not minimize its impact," Nadia Murad.

In 2014, the Yazidi community endured genocide at the hands of ISIS. Thousands of people were killed and kidnapped for no reason other than being Yazidis. Seven years have passed, yet there are still dozens of mass graves waiting to be exhumed. Yazidi survivors have been unable to bury their loved ones for years, exacerbating their communal trauma.

Today, Yazidi survivors attended the second Kocho burial ceremony, honoring the lives of over 40 community members who were killed. The ceremony is a visceral reminder of the urgent need to expedite exhumations out of respect for the deceased and survivors.
