Nadia Murad visits Kosovo to meet survivors and leaders

Nadia Murad was welcomed to Kosovo last week by President Vjosa Osmani. Together they met survivors of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) perpetrated during the war of 1998-1999.

Nadia listened to powerful stories from fellow survivors and was moved by their courage and resilience. Twenty years after the devastating war in Kosovo, some women have yet to share their experiences, burdened by the shame and stigma attached to speaking out.

Speaking to all survivors, Nadia said, “Remember you are not alone. We are a strong community, and together, we will continue to amplify each other’s voices until we are truly heard.”

During her trip, Nadia learned that survivors in Kosovo are not only aware of the Murad Code, but are actively using it to advocate for themselves.

In a productive meeting with Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Nadia addressed the needs of survivors and the importance of reparations and justice.

She also urged the Prime Minister to hold citizens who joined ISIS in Iraq and Syria accountable for their crimes against Yazidi women and other vulnerable groups.
