Interim Reparations: International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict

As we commemorate International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, Nadia's Initiative is spotlighting the importance of supporting and empowering survivors of CRSV. With our partner, the Global Survivors Fund, we recently launched a comprehensive interim reparations project for Yazidi survivors of ISIS captivity in Sinjar and Duhok.

The history of conflict-related sexual violence is as old as war itself. Holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes is a critical form of prevention and deterrence. Empowering survivors with the resources they need to heal and rebuild their lives should also be an equal priority.

Reparations are a form of redress aimed at restoring survivors' agency and empowering them to heal. Through this interim reparations pilot project, thousands of survivors in Duhok will receive compensation. Hundreds of survivors in Sinjar, who suffer from extreme poverty and inadequate resources, will have access to compensation, livelihoods, education, healthcare, mental healthcare, legal aid, and shelter.
