When ISIS invaded Sinjar city, Kani fled with her six children to Mount Sinjar and from there to displacement camps in the Kurdistan region. “We thought it would be a temporary displacement,” Kani shared, “But we lived a very difficult life in the camps for five years and suffered a lot from the cold and hot weather in a small tent.”

“Then we decided to go back to our hometown, and we found that our house was totally destroyed and all our assets were stolen. There was nothing left.” Kani moved in with relatives, but is still responsible for providing for her children. Her husband, who was killed by ISIS, had been the only source of income for their family. Without him, Kani could not make ends meet.

Kani enrolled in Nadia’s Initiative’s Women’s Empowerment and Livelihood program implemented by Mission East, with funding from UAE Aid. Through the program, Kani is participating in business training and will receive support to launch her own bakery.

“I have chosen baking because I have done research in my area and this business is needed and is profitable. I am now participating in baking training and I’m learning. I’m very excited to start my business soon.”
