Yazidis Cannot Go Home: Barriers to Return
Sinjar, Iraq was home to hundreds of thousands of Yazidis before it was destroyed by ISIS.
“We want to return to our homeland and live there,” says one Yazidi man.
A lack of government support has prevented many Yazidis from returning home. Hundreds of thousands of Yazidis still live in IDP camps just hours away from Sinjar, where they face increased violence, declining mental health, and few adequate public services.
Those who have returned to Sinjar continue to struggle. Many areas of Sinjar still lack clean water, electricity, schools, and health centers. South Sinjar is in need of demining and Turkish airstrikes are a daily reminder of the ongoing instability of the region.
The Yazidis have faced unimaginable violence and loss. They deserve a peaceful future, free from harm and persecution.
Nadia’s Initiative is working toward comprehensively rebuilding Sinjar to facilitate a safe and sustainable return for the Yazidi community.
