Nadia Murad Meets with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas
On May 7, 2021 Nadia Murad met with Minister Heiko Maas to discuss the implementation of UN Res. 2467 for a survivor-centric approach to conflict-related sexual violence, holistic justice for survivors, and the challenges facing Yazidis in Iraq. Nadia also had the chance to speak with students of the German Diplomatic Academy and share in celebration as one of their halls was named after UN Res. 1325 - Women, Peace, and Security. Meeting with current and future generations of world leaders who prioritize peace-building and women’s rights gives Nadia hope that justice for the Yazidi community and survivors of sexual violence is achievable with sustained action.
In 2019, Nadia worked with Minister Maas on the passage of UN Resolution 2467. The legislation introduced a survivor-centric lens to conflict-related sexual violence in international law, peacekeeping, and security. Passing legislation is not the end-all-be-all. It must be closely followed by implementation, action, and accountability.
