Marking the One Year Anniversary of the Yazidi Genocide Memorial
“This memorial will stand here, as a monument to the Yazidis who died, and a symbol of the strength of those who survived.” -
Nadia Murad, at the inauguration of the Yazidi Genocide Memorial on October 18, 2023
One year ago today, the Yazidi Genocide Memorial was inaugurated in Sinjar, Iraq. The memorial is a monument to those who suffered and died at the hands of ISIS, and a place of remembrance and healing for those families who were never reunited with their loved ones. It also serves as a tribute to the resilience of those who survived the genocide.
Since its opening last year, the memorial has become the foremost landmark for those who visit Sinjar. It is open to all, and stands as a stark reminder of one of the most brutal attacks in modern memory, leaving thousands of victims, widows, orphans, captives, and forcibly displaced people in its wake.
Over the last year, the memorial has welcomed dozens of daily visitors, including official delegations, diplomats, government officials, and victims’ families. Thousands of Yazidis have gathered there for ceremonies, burials, and genocide commemorations.
