Importance of Empowering Women in Post-Conflict Settings
According to the UN,
1 in 5 women and girls have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner within the last 12 months. Yet, 49 countries have no laws that specifically protect women from such violence.
Men can legally prevent their wives from working in 18 countries.
Sons have greater inheritance rights than daughters in 39 countries.
And only 52% of women married or in a union freely make their own decisions about sexual relations, contraceptive use, and health care.
Gender inequality is a deep-seated and complex issue. The reasons for it are widespread and rooted in religion, culture, and history.
Yet, women’s empowerment is essential to the sustainable development of communities around the world. Not only is gender equality a human right, it is a key element in the building of peaceful and prosperous nations. When women are given access to the opportunities and resources they need to reach their full potential, they contribute greatly to their communities and local economies. Household incomes increase, infant mortality rates decrease, and children are able to stay in school longer.
We can empower women all over the world by increasing access to education, reproductive rights, the right to autonomy, job opportunities, and equal pay. When women’s lives are safe, productive, and fulfilled, everyone benefits.
“There are women in every community who are surviving, standing up, and speaking out. When we unite to fight for our rights, change will be unstoppable.” — Nadia Murad
