Saleem's Story: Role of Higher Education in Promoting Sustainable Development in Sinjar
Thousands of Yazidis in Sinjar strive for a better socioeconomic future for their homeland, but Saleem has one additional goal in mind: to ensure that the region’s redevelopment is done in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.
Saleem has always been keen to contribute to the betterment of his community. During his four years of displacement in Khanke camp, he worked as a volunteer teacher and got involved in other community service initiatives.
In 2018, Saleem made use of his free time by studying for a diploma at the JWL’s higher education center. After completing coursework, Saleem gained a deeper understanding of sustainable development at the local, regional, and global levels. These factors encouraged him to pursue undertake a bachelor’s degree in sustainable development at JWL.
"My perspective on the environment has shifted. We must do more to protect the environment. We would lose a lot if we didn't regulate how we used our resources. We must take a greater interest in trees, water, and all of the planet's resources. "
Saleem is putting his knowledge into action. He is taking the lead in proposing environmentally-friendly trash recycling projects at work and in his community. Saleem and his classmates have several suggestions for improving the region's sustainability and protecting the natural environment.
"I hope that people will prioritize environmental and public wellbeing above self-interest, and seek integrity above quantity. Nadia's Initiative and JWL provide excellent opportunities for young people to further their education. I believe that providing a free BA in sustainable development is a fantastic opportunity for all of us, and we must not miss this chance. “
