Nadia Murad meets with H.E. Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq

As part of her wider visit to the region and to attend the inauguration of the Yazidi Genocide Memorial, Nadia Murad met His Excellency Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq (KRI) on Thursday 19th October.

A central theme of Nadia Murad's speech at the memorial ceremony was the importance of finding and rescuing the 2,000 Yazidi women and children who are still in ISIS captivity.

The president of the KRI has been a key supporter of this mission, and they spoke about on-going efforts to reunite more women with their families.

They also discussed the need to resolve political disputes between Baghdad and Erbil over Sinjar.

As she had in her speech at the inauguration ceremony, Nadia Murad also advocated for more government projects and funding in the region.

She also raised the importance of continuing to document the thousands of ISIS crimes against Yazidis.

Rescuing, re-building and documenting are important steps on the road to justice and healing for the Yazidi community.
