Nadia Murad Honored at The Albies with “Justice for Defenders of the Rule of Law” Award

Nadia Murad, President of Nadia’s Initiative (NI), was honored with the “Justice for Defenders of the Rule of Law” award at the 2024 Albie Awards hosted by the Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ). As CFJ highlights on their website, The Albies “recognize and celebrate those who have put their lives on the line in their fearless fight for justice around the globe.” Both Nadia and the work of NI were recognized during the event.

During her acceptance speech, Nadia spoke to the heart of her work, saying:

"Violence against women is a crime that undermines the dignity and rights of all people. Rape is not an inevitable consequence of war. It is a deliberate weapon. It is a powerful weapon because it lasts forever. It lives in your soul, your bones, and your mind. But there, it can transform into far more powerful weapons: truth, hope, and compassion. These weapons of the spirit can and must be wielded to fight for justice."

Nadia highlighted the important work of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, which is leading the way in championing justice and accountability around the world. Nadia also expressed her deep gratitude for Amal Clooney, a longtime partner in the pursuit of justice, saying:

“It has been an honor to stand alongside Amal Clooney in the fight for justice and accountability, working to ensure that perpetrators of crimes against humanity and conflict-related sexual violence are held responsible.”

The event brought together many prominent organizations and activists, including representatives from the Gates Foundation and the Obama Foundation. The 2024 Albie Awards serves as a poignant reminder of Nadia’s and NI’s continued commitment to working with its partners to advance justice and support survivors across the globe.
